A Month of Training in Germany and a Unified Code: Outcomes of the First Syrian–German Medical Engineering Forum
The first Syrian–German Medical Engineering Forum concluded at Damascus University with calls for a unified medical engineering code, one-month training in Germany for top students, and DAAD cooperation.
Damascus — The first Syrian–German Medical Engineering Forum concluded at Damascus University, calling for faster work on a unified Syrian code for medical engineering and for unified technical and operational standards across healthcare facilities.

Closing Recommendations
The recommendations covered standard unification in energy systems, medical waste management, and medical equipment maintenance programs, alongside keeping pace with modern European legislation on medical device licensing (MDR) to guarantee safety and quality standards for national equipment.
The forum stressed localizing technological knowledge and developing maintenance skills for complex devices, particularly endoscopy, eye surgery, and MRI equipment.
Dispatch to Germany and Cooperation with DAAD
The forum recommended sending outstanding students in medical engineering to Germany for one-month specialized training courses, within student exchange programs.
It called for sustainable academic cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), providing scholarships and research fellowships for postgraduate students and equipping university laboratories with modern technical equipment.
On its second day, the forum covered study mechanisms in Germany, visa procedures, and university admission requirements, and reviewed scholarship opportunities offered by German institutions.
Two Days of Workshops and Hands-On Training
The forum opened on Monday at the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Damascus University, organized by the Syrian Biomedical Engineering Society in partnership with the Syrian Gathering in Germany, with the goal of qualifying 200 medical engineers for the job market.
Syrian Engineers Syndicate head Malik Haj Ali said the forum is the first fruit of joint cooperation under the memorandum of understanding signed between the Society and the Gathering, aiming to benefit from Syrian expertise abroad and advanced German technology.
Syrian Biomedical Engineering Society president Omar Hamami said the program included lectures on the European Union’s medical devices system and practical training in eye surgery and endoscopic surgery.

Syrian Gathering in Germany board member Ahmad al-Hamwi noted that the practical training was supervised by three specialized companies, on modern medical devices imported from Europe for this purpose, and included a workshop on the latest operation and maintenance techniques for endoscopic surgery devices.
From Damascus to the Provinces
The forum called for a work plan to transfer its experience and training workshops to other Syrian provinces, starting with Aleppo, with intensified scientific and academic visit exchanges, dispatching faculty members to German universities and institutes, and hosting German experts in Syria.
In August, the Engineers Syndicate signed two memoranda of understanding to develop the medical engineering sector, with the Syrian Biomedical Engineering Society, and between the Society and the Syrian Gathering in Germany.
