Damascus – The Ministry of Transport announced on Friday the award of contracts to rehabilitate three strategic road axes to an alliance of Syria’s Lubar Trading and Qatar’s Al Jaber Engineering Contracting, in the first practical outcome of the international tender launched by the General Establishment for Road Transport to rehabilitate Syria’s central road network.

Preparatory Meeting Before Signing

Minister of Transport Yarub Badr held an expanded meeting today with Mohamed Sultan Al Jaber, Chairman of Qatar’s Al Jaber Group, and Naji Barry, Director of Lubar Trading, to discuss the technical and logistical preparations required to implement the rehabilitation projects for the Damascus-Homs and Homs-Aleppo roads and the Saraqib-Idlib link, ahead of completing the contractual procedures and starting implementation.

The meeting addressed the technical and logistical requirements of the projects, the proposed work mechanisms and coordination between the concerned parties and the two companies, in order to prepare the appropriate conditions for works to start in line with the approved technical specifications and set timelines. The contracts for the three projects are expected to be signed in the coming weeks ahead of actual implementation.

A Three-Year Engineering Workshop

Minister Badr said Syria will witness over the next three years a wide engineering workshop in the infrastructure of its central road network, following the award of a number of project contracts to specialised international companies after the international tender announced by the General Establishment for Road Transport as part of its plan to attract the required technical and engineering expertise.

He explained that the upcoming projects aim to raise the efficiency and capacity of the road network, improve the flow of passenger and freight transport, and raise traffic safety levels, in line with the requirements of developing Syria’s land transport sector.

Vital Axes Linking South to North

The Damascus-Homs-Aleppo axis, together with the Saraqib-Idlib link, is among the most important road axes linking the south of the country to its north. It passes through key areas that serve passenger and freight movement between governorates, at a time when the ministry’s plan gives priority to vital axes of economic and commercial importance.

The meeting was attended by Mouaz Najjar, Director General of the General Establishment for Road Transport, his deputy Mohamed Daaif, and Director of Land Transport Ali Esber.
