Tourists are returning to Syria faster than the country can build rooms.

The Ministry of Tourism’s figures for the first half of 2026 put the country before a new equation: demand is exploding, and hotel supply is struggling to keep up.

The Numbers: An Unprecedented Jump

Turkey tops the international source markets, followed by Germany, Sweden, the US, the Netherlands, Canada and the UK.

Among Arab markets: Jordan first, then Lebanon and Iraq — with the Gulf among the fastest-growing markets (Saudi Arabia +176% in 2025).

Dama Rose: Syria’s Largest Hotel Goes Into Surgery

The country’s largest hotel and one of Damascus’s best-known hospitality landmarks is being redeveloped under a 25-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) agreement between the Ministry of Tourism and Ahmad Abdulghani Economic Group.

The phased programme covers:

The bet: repositioning the hotel for Gulf families, business executives, international visitors and major events.

Aviation Opens the Doors

Gulf carriers have resumed or launched services: flydubai, Air Arabia, flynas, Qatar Airways, Jazeera Airways and Etihad — alongside Turkish, Jordanian, Lebanese and European airlines.

Conclusion: History Brings Them the First Time.. Hospitality Brings Them Back

Syria holds 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and more than 246 major archaeological sites — but the challenge now is hotel capacity, modern tourism infrastructure, payment systems and service quality.

As the Dama Rose chairman puts it: history may bring visitors to Damascus for the first time, but world-class hospitality is what will bring them back.
