A New Investment Channel: Syrian Investment Authority Opens the Door to the Australian Market
The Syrian Investment Authority meets the Syrian-Australian Business Council in Damascus: industrial and food-security investment cooperation, and preparations for an Australian delegation visit after the November elections.
Damascus – 22 October 2026
Syria has opened a new investment channel with the Australian market, after the Director of the Syrian Investment Authority, Ahmad Rawad Ramadan, met a delegation from the Syrian-Australian Business Council and a number of investors at the Authority’s headquarters in Damascus, in the first direct engagement at this level with a market that previously had no prominent economic presence in Syria.
Details of the Meeting
The meeting, attended by the Chairman of the Syrian-Australian Business Council, Marwan Al-Dabbagh, discussed ways to strengthen investment cooperation between Syria and Australia, the challenges facing industrial investments, and the procedures for licensing factories operating in the food security sector.
It also addressed mechanisms for communicating with specialists from the Syrian community in Australia, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, in a way that contributes to developing economic and investment relations between the two countries.
An Australian Delegation Expected After the Elections
The meeting included preparations for a visit by an Australian delegation of businessmen and government officials to Syria following the elections scheduled in Australia next November, to explore cooperation opportunities and ways to strengthen economic and investment partnerships.
Context of the New Council
The Syrian-Australian Business Council was established by a decision of the Syrian Ministry of Economy and Industry issued on 6 October, as part of organising the work of joint business councils, developing economic relations with other countries, and strengthening communication between businessmen and investors, enabling them to explore cooperation opportunities and build partnerships in productive and investment sectors.
What Does This Mean?
The step represents an expansion of Syria’s investment market map towards an entirely new market, with a potential executive gateway through the Syrian community in Australia. The next milestone to watch: the announcement of the Australian delegation’s visit date after the elections, its composition, and whether it will bring tangible contracts or memoranda of understanding.
