From Damascus Talks to a Newer Bus Fleet: Syria and Oman Open the Door to Bus Cooperation
A meeting at the Transport Ministry in Damascus explored bus supply and manufacturing and modern transport services with Oman Automotive Industries, as a first step of exploration before any signed agreement.
The opportunity is clear: a meeting in Damascus has opened a practical path toward a newer, more efficient Syrian bus fleet, with bus supply and manufacturing at the centre of the talks.
Transport Minister Yarub Badr met Ibrahim bin Ali Al-Balushi, CEO of Oman Automotive Industries, at the ministry in Damascus. The talks explored cooperation and investment in Syria’s transport sector, led by supplying and manufacturing buses, alongside modern transport services and logistics.
Badr underlined the value of stronger cooperation with Oman and sister countries, and of drawing on their experience to develop Syria’s transport fleet, including electronic applications that make transport services easier and more efficient.
Al-Balushi, in turn, expressed the company’s interest in exploring investment opportunities in the Syrian market and building lasting partnerships that meet transport needs and strengthen Omani industry’s regional presence.
Oman Automotive Industries makes buses at its plant in the Duqm Special Economic Zone, which began production in 2021. It specialises in city, school and intercity buses, and is also diversifying into armoured vehicles.
Syria needs to renew its bus fleet, raise service efficiency and expand digital tools in managing transport — and a specialist manufacturer with a production line already running can shorten the distance between need and supply.
What will decide the shape of the cooperation is the move from exploring opportunities to a signed agreement: a supply contract, a manufacturing partnership, or a work plan with dates and numbers.
Until then, the meeting remains an early signal, not a finished deal: no signed supply contract has been announced, no bus numbers, and no date for manufacturing to start in Syria.
