The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is working with the Syrian government to rehabilitate 200 schools before the end of 2026, at a cost of 20 million dollars.
The programme was announced at the opening of the Project Syria 2026 exhibition and conference at the Damascus Fairgrounds, on Monday 2 November 2026, by UNICEF Deputy Representative in Syria Laurence Ondo.

Alongside the schools, the programme includes the rehabilitation of 256 health centres, at a cost of 24 million dollars.
The programme covers the rehabilitation of existing buildings and their return to service.
At Ibn Khaldun School in Baniyas, reopened on 18 October 2026 after rehabilitation carried out by UNICEF, the work included painting, windows, bathrooms, desk repairs and the installation of a solar power system.

It was stated at the opening that returning families are adding pressure to existing services, that humanitarian funding alone is not sufficient to meet needs, and that expanding partnerships with the private sector is required.
The announced information did not include a list of the 200 schools, their distribution across governorates, or the implementation mechanism.
The implementation picture will become clear when the lists of included schools are published.
